How TopDevs Verifies Companies & Calculates Trust Scores

Every company on TopDevs is assessed by a transparent, data-driven model — not by who pays the most. Here is exactly how verification and the Trust Score work, factor by factor.

1. Verification

Before a profile carries the AI Verified badge, it passes two checks:

  • Domain-confirmed ownership. When a company claims its profile, we confirm control of the official company domain via a verification email to an address on that domain. Only a verified owner can manage the listing.
  • AI content review. Any content an owner submits — name, description, news, categories — is reviewed by an AI verification system for accuracy, relevance and policy compliance before it goes live. Borderline cases are escalated to a human reviewer.

2. The Trust Score (0–100)

The Trust Score is a weighted average of nine factors, each scored from 0 to 1 and combined into a single 0–100 index. The weights below sum to 100% and are applied identically to every company.

FactorWhat it measuresWeight
Average source ratingThe mean star rating across every third-party directory that lists the company, normalised to a 5-point scale. The single biggest factor.30%
Review volumeHow many underlying reviews back those ratings, on a logarithmic curve — more reviews mean more statistical confidence, with diminishing returns past ~100.15%
Number of sourcesHow many independent directories (Clutch, GoodFirms, DesignRush, and others) corroborate the company. More agreeing sources is harder to fake.10%
Cross-source consistencyHow closely the ratings agree across those sources. Tight agreement scores higher; wildly divergent ratings lower the score.10%
Profile completenessHow fully the company profile is populated (description, website, location, categories, logo).10%
AI verification confidenceThe confidence of our AI checks on content the company has submitted (name, description, news, categories).10%
Website validityWhether the company has a valid, reachable website, with a bonus when a source profile corroborates the same domain.5%
Data freshnessHow recently the underlying ratings were refreshed. Stale data decays the score over time.5%
Spam & fraud signalsThe absence of patterns associated with fake listings or manipulated reviews. Fewer red flags scores higher.5%

A per-company breakdown of these factors is stored with every profile and surfaced under the Trust Score on the company page.

3. Source-backed ratings

The headline star rating you see on a profile is not ours to invent — it is a confidence-weighted average of publicly available ratings from established third-party directories including Clutch, GoodFirms and DesignRush, normalised to a single 5-point scale. A company shown as "4.8 / 5 across 175 reviews" is reflecting those external sources, with the review count carried through so you can judge how much weight to give it.

4. What we don't do

  • We don't sell ranking position. No company can pay to rank higher.
  • We don't invent ratings. Every star rating traces back to a third-party source.
  • We don't let companies edit their own Trust Score — it's computed from objective signals.

Frequently asked questions

Is ranking on TopDevs pay-to-play?

No. Placement is driven by the Trust Score and aggregated source ratings described on this page — never by payment. Companies cannot buy a higher position.

Where do the ratings come from?

We aggregate publicly available ratings and review counts from established third-party directories such as Clutch, GoodFirms and DesignRush, then normalise them to a single 5-point scale.

What does "AI Verified" mean?

It means the company has passed our automated verification checks — domain-confirmed ownership for claimed profiles, and AI review of any content the company submits (name, description, news, categories) for accuracy and policy compliance.

How is the Trust Score calculated?

It is a weighted average of nine factors (listed above), each scored 0–1 and combined into a 0–100 index. The largest factor is the average third-party rating; the rest reward review volume, multi-source agreement, completeness, freshness, and the absence of spam signals.

Can a company change its own Trust Score?

Not directly. The score is computed from objective signals. Companies can improve it over time by maintaining accurate profiles and earning genuine reviews on third-party platforms.

How often is data refreshed?

Source ratings are re-synced on a rolling schedule and Trust Scores are recalculated regularly. A "data freshness" factor decays the score if a company's underlying data becomes stale.
